Understanding Trāṭaka (Candle Gaze)
One of the six classical purification techniques (Shatkarmas) detailed in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Trāṭaka stabilizes optic micro-saccades to still the fluctuations of the mind (Chitta Vritti). By resting the gaze upon a steady candle flame until tears naturally arise, the visual cortex quiets, activating the pineal gland and the Ajna (third eye) chakra while purifying the tear ducts and relieving mental fatigue.
Spiritual Significance
In the Numinous path, Trāṭaka (Candle Gaze) represents a key pillar for bridging the gap between physical reality and the subtle energies of consciousness.
